Tarik Skubal notched his first victory in over a year, Kerry Carpenter and Zack Short drove in two runs apiece and the host Detroit Tigers defeated the slumping San Francisco Giants 5-1 on Monday.

The game was a makeup of an April 16 postponement.

Skubal (1-1), who was making his fourth start of the year, struck out nine while holding the Giants to no runs and two hits in five innings.

His previous victory came against Oakland on July 21, 2022. He underwent flexor tendon surgery in August.

Short homered in his only at-bat. Riley Greene had three hits and scored twice, while Spencer Torkelson added two hits and drove in a run.

Wilmer Flores homered for San Francisco, which has lost a season-worst six straight games at the end of an 11-game road trip.

Giants starter Ross Stripling (0-4) gave up three runs and 10 hits in six-plus innings.

The Tigers opened the scoring in the first inning. Greene ripped an opposite-field double and scored on Torkelson's single to center.

Detroit second baseman Andy Ibanez robbed LaMonte Wade Jr. of a base hit in the third. Ibanez made a diving stop on the outfield grass and threw out Wade while still on the ground.

Detroit added a run in the third. Jake Rogers led off with a single and moved to second on Greene's single. With two outs, Carpenter bounced a single into right field to score Rogers. Left fielder Austin Slater's diving catch against Ibanez kept the score at 2-0.

Skubal completed his stellar outing in the fifth by striking out David Villar and Casey Schmitt. Giants right fielder Michael Conforto robbed Zach McKinstry of a home run in the bottom of the inning.

The Tigers pushed across another run in the fifth on consecutive singles by Greene, Torkelson and Carpenter.

San Francisco got on the board when Flores launched a two-out homer against Jose Cisnero in the sixth. It was Flores' 13th this season.

Short, a defensive replacement, blasted a two-run homer in the eighth.
